Across Southeast Asia, torch ginger has long been cherished as both an ornamental flower and a culinary treasure. Growing in tropical gardens and forest edges from Southern Thailand to Indonesia and Malaysia, its striking pink and crimson blooms are impossible to miss. Yet beyond its beauty lies an ingredient that has shaped regional cuisines for generations.

Known in Southern Thailand as daala, torch ginger brings a vibrant personality to the table. Its petals offer delicate floral notes, gentle acidity, and a subtle peppery character, while its unmistakable aroma brings freshness and lift to rich curries, seafood dishes, and spicy broths. For centuries, local communities have incorporated the flower into recipes that reflect the abundance of the tropical landscapes they call home.

Today, as chefs across Asia continue to explore the region’s culinary heritage, traditional ingredients such as torch ginger are finding new expressions beyond their customary roles. Rather than preserving them solely in familiar recipes, a new generation of cooks is discovering how these ingredients can inspire contemporary creations while remaining deeply rooted in place.

This spirit of exploration can be found at Restaurant Royd, a member of Secret Table by Secret Retreats. Drawing inspiration from Southern Thailand’s rich culinary traditions, Royd embraces local ingredients not as relics of the past, but as living elements capable of evolving with modern gastronomy.

In Restaurant Royd‘s kitchen, torch ginger becomes more than a supporting ingredient. Each layer of the flower is carefully examined for its individual character, revealing varying levels of fragrance, texture, acidity, and spice. By separating and highlighting these distinct qualities, the team transforms a familiar ingredient into a thoughtful exploration of flavour, allowing diners to experience torch ginger in ways they may never have encountered before.

The result is not fusion for the sake of novelty, but a conversation between heritage and creativity. Traditional knowledge provides the foundation, while contemporary techniques offer new perspectives. The flower’s natural brightness continues to perform its timeless role of balancing richness and enhancing aroma, yet its presentation invites guests to look more closely at an ingredient that is often overlooked.

This approach reflects a broader movement taking place throughout Asia’s dining scene, where chefs are increasingly turning to indigenous ingredients, local biodiversity, and regional food traditions as sources of inspiration. Rather than looking outward, they are looking deeper into their own landscapes, uncovering stories and flavours that have always been present.

For travellers, these experiences offer something more meaningful than a memorable meal. They provide a window into the culture, ecology, and traditions of a destination. Through ingredients such as torch ginger, diners discover how history, geography, and local knowledge continue to influence contemporary cuisine.

Through Secret Table by Secret Retreats, guests are invited to experience restaurants like Royd, where culinary innovation begins with a respect for place. Here, a flower that has flavoured Southeast Asian kitchens for generations becomes a symbol of how tradition continues to inspire the future—one carefully crafted dish at a time

Dear guests and friends of Secret Retreats,

In most places, colour is decoration. Something applied after the fact — paint on a wall, dye in a thread.

In India, colour is something else entirely.

It is meaning. It is ceremony. It is the first language spoken here, long before words were needed.

India does not do subtlety. Its skies blaze saffron at dawn, its markets overflow with marigold and magenta, its powders cloud the air at festival time in pink and violet and green. A bride wears red because red is the colour of the sun and of life itself. A temple is painted in sindoor because that particular shade of orange-red has been sacred for thousands of years. There is the indigo that once built trading empires, and the turmeric yellow that heals, blesses, and marks the beginning of things.

In India, you do not simply see colour. You feel its weight, its history, its intention.

To travel through India with open eyes is to receive a long, unhurried education in the meaning of what you are looking at. Each region has its own palette — as distinct as a language, as tied to the land as the spices that grow there.

And each of the journeys below is, in its own way, a lesson in reading India through the colours it keeps.

<img loading="lazy" src="https://www.secret-retreats.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/jaipur1-1024x726.jpg" alt="Jaipur is known as the Pink City, but that familiar name barely scratches the surface.
Rajasthan · Jaipur

The Pink City and Its Secret Reds

Jaipur is known as the Pink City, but that familiar name barely scratches the surface. In the dyer’s quarter of the old city, workshops that have operated for generations transform ordinary cloth into something that seems to hold the sunset inside it.

Here, artisans lower cotton into vats of geru and sindoor before hanging it across rooftops and alleyways to dry. The colours have names in Rajasthani that have no true equivalent in English — shades that distinguish the red of desert earth from the red of a pomegranate, or the red worn by a bride on her wedding day.

To walk through these lanes in the early morning, with steam rising from dye vats and fabric glowing against the pale sky, is to understand why Rajasthan’s textiles have captivated travellers for centuries.

Uttar Pradesh · Varanasi

Holi on the Sacred Ghats

There is nowhere on earth where colour becomes quite as joyful, overwhelming, and transformative as Varanasi during Holi.

For one day each spring, the ancient city surrenders itself to clouds of pink, orange, green, and violet. Yet beneath the celebration lies something deeper. Varanasi is one of Hinduism’s most sacred cities, and Holi’s colours carry stories of devotion, renewal, and the triumph of light over darkness.

To witness the festival from a boat on the Ganges, with ancient temples emerging through a haze of colour, is to experience India at its most exuberantly alive.

The Beauty Standard That Fascinates and Disturbs

Imagine a beauty ideal so powerful that it shaped the lives of women for nearly a thousand years.

Imagine a standard so admired that families believed it could secure wealth, status, and a better marriage. Yet imagine, too, a practice that many people today find shocking, even unimaginable.

Welcome to the story of China’s lotus feet.

For travellers seeking to understand Asia beyond its landscapes, temples, and cuisines, few cultural traditions reveal as much about the changing nature of society as foot binding. It is a story of beauty and status, power and tradition, and ultimately, of a society that transformed itself.

The Lotus Foot

The practice of foot binding is believed to have emerged among the imperial courts of China around the 10th century before gradually spreading throughout much of the country.

Young girls, often between the ages of four and eight, would have their feet tightly wrapped to prevent normal growth. Over time, the feet became dramatically smaller and arched. The resulting feet were known as lotus feet, a poetic term inspired by the lotus flower, long associated in Chinese culture with elegance, refinement, and beauty.

The most desirable feet measured around three inches in length and were celebrated as golden lotuses. Larger feet might be referred to as silver lotuses or even iron lotuses. Such distinctions reveal just how deeply this beauty ideal became embedded in society.

To modern eyes, the contrast is striking. The lotus flower symbolises grace and purity, yet the reality behind lotus feet was often painful. And still, for centuries, they represented the height of feminine beauty.

Discover Secret Journeys
in China

A Beauty Standard Unlike Any Other

Few historical customs provoke such mixed reactions.

Many people encounter the story of lotus feet with a sense of fascination. Others react with disbelief or outrage. Most experience both at once.

How could something so restrictive become desirable?

The answer lies in understanding that beauty standards are rarely just about beauty.

For generations, lotus feet communicated social status, discipline, and family prestige. Small feet suggested that a woman came from a household prosperous enough that she would not need to undertake hard physical labour. The smaller the feet, the more admired the achievement.

In many regions of China, a daughter’s marriage prospects could be closely linked to the size of her feet. Families viewed foot binding not merely as an aesthetic choice but as an investment in social mobility and economic security.

Looking back, it is easy to judge. Yet the story also reminds us that every society creates ideals that shape behaviour. What one generation views as desirable, another may find incomprehensible.

But How Did They Walk?

One question inevitably arises whenever travellers learn about lotus feet.

How did women walk?

Contrary to popular belief, women with bound feet did walk. However, their movement was limited to short, careful steps, creating what became known as the “lotus gait.” The swaying motion was often considered graceful and attractive.

Among the wealthy elite, mobility was often less important. Noblewomen frequently travelled in sedan chairs carried by attendants and spent much of their lives within domestic compounds. In such circles, limited mobility was not seen as a disadvantage but rather as evidence of privilege and status.

For women in less affluent households, however, life could be considerably more demanding. Many still worked, managed households, and carried out daily responsibilities despite the challenges imposed by bound feet.

The reality was far more complex than many people imagine.

The End of a Thousand-Year Tradition

By the late nineteenth century, China was changing rapidly.

Reformers, intellectuals, and women’s advocates increasingly questioned long-standing traditions. As China confronted foreign powers and sought to modernise, foot binding came to be viewed by many as a symbol of the country’s need for reform.

Anti-foot-binding societies emerged across the country. Families pledged not to bind their daughters’ feet and not to seek bound-foot brides for their sons. Following the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, the new Republican government formally prohibited the practice.

The ban did not end foot binding overnight. In some rural areas it persisted for decades. Yet the tide had turned. A custom that had endured for nearly a millennium gradually disappeared.

Today, lotus feet survive only in photographs, museum collections, historical accounts, and the memories of a dwindling number of women born into the final generation to experience the practice.

<img src="https://www.secret-retreats.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/shoes1-edited.jpg" alt="Foot binding or Lotus feet, ancient practice for noble female.
Understanding Asia Through Its Stories

The story of lotus feet is not simply about foot binding.

It is about how societies define beauty. How traditions endure. How values evolve. And how cultures change over time.

Across Asia, travellers encounter countless examples of customs that once shaped everyday life. Some survive. Others have vanished. All offer clues to understanding the people and histories that created the Asia we know today.

At Secret Retreats, we believe that meaningful travel begins with curiosity. It is found not only in visiting remarkable destinations but also in understanding the stories behind them. A heritage home, a conversation with a local guide, a centuries-old tradition, or a forgotten chapter of history can reveal far more than any guidebook.

The story of lotus feet may belong to the past, but it reminds us of something essential: Asia is not a museum frozen in time. It is a living, evolving tapestry of cultures, beliefs, and traditions.

The more we understand these stories, the richer our journeys become.

Because the true secret of Asia is not only where we travel, but what we learn along the way.

Where Two Worlds Meet

One of the planet’s most extraordinary invisible boundaries divides the Indonesian archipelago. This invisible boundary is the Wallace Line, identified by the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace in the 19th century, a biogeographical divide it separates the wildlife of Asia from that of Australia and Oceania.

To the west of the Wallace Line lie Asian species such as orangutans, monkeys, elephants, and hornbills. To the east of the line we see cockatoos, marsupials, and endemic wildlife that are found nowhere else on Earth. What makes the Wallace Line so astonishing is how suddenly the transition happens. The line runs between Bali and Lombok, separated by only a narrow strait, the ecosystems and nature of these 2 islands become distinct and different. The same occurs between Borneo and Sulawesi. Deep ocean trenches have prevented species from crossing for millions of years, allowing two different worlds of nature to evolve side by side.

For travellers, this is not simply science. It creates an opportunity for one of the rare journeys on Earth where one can quite literally travel between evolutionary realms. And few collections of boutique hospitality reveal this wonder more beautifully than the Secret Retreats collection of hotels, retreats, yachts and phinisi that are located across Indonesia and the eastern archipelago.

Bali and Lombok: At the Threshold of Wallace’s Line

The journey begins in Bali, with its unique Hindu culture and volcanic landscapes and still part of the Asian ecological world.

At Tugu Bali, guests step into a world of Indonesian artistry, mythology, antiques, and old-world romance, this beautiful property is a living tribute to the artistic and cultural soul of the archipelago.

In the cool highlands of North Bali, Sanak Retreat Bali reveals another side of the island, here volcanic mountains, rice terraces, and village life remain deeply connected to Bali’s ancient rhythms and agricultural heritage.

Along Bali’s quieter western shores, Kelapa Retreat & Spa embraces the island’s elemental beauty, where black volcanic sands, ocean breezes, and tropical forests evoke the raw natural forces that have shaped these islands over millennia.

Meanwhile, in the spiritual valley landscapes of Sidemen, Surya Shanti Villa Sidemen offers an immersion into Bali’s sacred traditions, where temples, rice fields, and mist-covered hills reflect the island’s enduring harmony between nature and spirituality.

But crossing the Lombok Strait changes the story.
At Tugu Lombok and Slow Gili Lombok, travellers arrive at the edge of the Wallacea region as it is known, the transitional zone between Asia and Oceania. Here, reefs become richer, landscapes wilder, and wildlife increasingly Australasian in character.

Island hopping here, is travelling between worlds.

Borneo: The Ancient Asian Rainforest

Further west, the jungles of Borneo remain one of Asia’s last great wildernesses.
With WOW Borneo Cruises, travellers journey deep into Kalimantan’s rainforest rivers where orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and hornbills still thrive beneath ancient jungle canopies.

These forests belong firmly to the Asian side of the Wallace Line, connected long ago to mainland Asia during prehistoric ice ages.

Today, travellers can explore this remarkable corner of Sarawak from Cove 55, where rainforest-covered mountains, mangrove-lined coastlines, and the legacy of Wallace himself remain woven into the landscape. Just minutes away lies the site associated with Wallace’s famous Sarawak Law, one of the earliest scientific steps towards understanding evolution and the patterns of life that would eventually lead him to identify the Wallace Line.

It was within these islands and seas that Wallace first began noticing the remarkable differences in wildlife distribution that would later transform scientific understanding of evolution.

Sulawesi and Manado: The Heart of Wallacea

Nowhere does the Wallace Line feel more alive than in North Sulawesi.
Around Manado lies Wallacea itself, here lies a strange and beautiful meeting point of Asian and Australasian ecosystems. Isolated for millions of years, extraordinary wildlife has evolved on Sulawesi, it is home to spectral tarsiers, black crested macaques, bear cuscus, and rare endemic birds that are found nowhere else on Earth.
At Gangga Island Resort & Spa, guests experience one of Indonesia’s richest marine environments between Bunaken, Bangka Island, and the Lembeh Strait.

Above water, volcanic islands shelter rare wildlife. Beneath the surface, the biodiversity becomes even more astonishing with mimic octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, pygmy seahorses, frogfish, and surreal coral ecosystems shaped by the powerful ocean currents.
This is evolution in its most vivid, vibrant, and varied form.

Sailing the Invisible Frontier

The journey becomes even more profound aboard one of the beautiful phinisi yachts of Silolona Sojourns, whose handcrafted voyages sail through Manado and the remote eastern Indonesian archipelago.

As travellers move eastward across Wallacea, the transformation becomes increasingly visible. Asian fauna slowly disappears and is replaced by wildlife and ecosystems that have more in common with Australasia than Asia.
The marine world also changes dramatically as the voyage enters the Coral Triangle, a place that is considered the global epicentre of marine biodiversity.

A journey aboard Silolona is therefore much more than a luxurious cruise aboard a beautiful yacht. It is also a voyage through deep natural history itself.

The Wonder of Wallacea

Today, the region between Bali and Sulawesi is known as Wallacea, it is one of the most biologically fascinating places on Earth, where two great evolutionary realms meet.

But beyond science, the Wallace Line reminds us that our world is home to invisible borders, ancient migrations, and islands that shaped life itself.

The spirit of discovery lies at the heart of Secret Retreats. From Bali’s spiritual valleys to the rainforests of Borneo and the volcanic seas of Sulawesi, these journeys reveal not only beautiful destinations, but the deeper stories of nature, culture, and evolution woven across Asia’s hidden frontiers.

And perhaps that is the true magic of Wallacea.
Not simply witnessing beauty, but travelling between worlds.

THE BUTLER by SECRET RETREATS

Every Monday, I take you wandering somewhere in Thailand, in search of a place, a dish, an emotion, a singular experience — something that might kindle a spark in your eyes and awaken the desire to live through, or simply behold, something truly special.

Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit
Official & full name of the city called Bangkok in English

Hello, Bangkok!

Glass towers lining the great avenues seem to slice the sky with razor-sharp edges. Yet, in muted sepia tones, hidden away down quieter streets, old houses with flower-filled gardens keep watch beneath the shade of towering trees. Three-storey buildings joined shoulder to shoulder, relics of the 1960s and ’70s — the golden age of architecture — where, from the terraces, people fly kites, watch pigeons drift beneath the racing clouds, and remember Mitr Chaibancha, the untouchable icon of the silver screen, whose films still flicker through the nation’s collective memory.

The villas of that era stand as tributes to modernism, preserving the lingering voices of generations once gathered beneath the same roof, before all slowly faded into the dust of time.

Certain quarters of Chinatown are now undergoing sweeping renovations, their old crumbling buildings slowly shedding the scars of time. Yet the district still preserves its tangled alleyways, where the scent of engine oil and repair garages has replaced the drifting incense of Taoist shrines.

Venture farther from the centre and follow the canals by boat — the city’s long, winding veins — carrying you toward adventure. Here and there, one market gives way to another, according to the hour and the needs of the day. Human anthills pulse with restless energy: rounded handcarts creak past, tuk-tuks overflow with provisions, and life seems to spill endlessly in every direction.

New neighbourhoods of towering apartment blocks rise skyward, yet at their heart they recreate the feeling of villages. And true villages still endure, their wooden houses huddled tightly together. Scattered across this immense urban web, temples gleam beneath the sun, answering the chants of the monks. Motorbikes begin their daily ballet of deliveries; schoolchildren pass by in immaculate uniforms.

Handcarts rumble from one street to the next, while vendors selling desserts, soups, and every imaginable dish gradually transform the pavement into rows of makeshift restaurants rooted to the sidewalk.

And perhaps today, somewhere beside a canal, I will come upon a goldsmith melting gold in a tiny crucible by the water’s edge.

Bangkok is a vast sponge, drawing in everything that comes within its reach, transforming it through its own rhythms, its own codes, its own spices. Bangkok takes hold of our soul and fashions us another in its place.

Bangkok, I love you!

And you — what do you truly know of Bangkok? Have you ever sat at the edge of a street and watched the great cinema of the world unfold before your eyes? And your guests — have they ever allowed themselves the luxury of doing nothing at all, of getting lost simply for the joy of it?

Until next Monday,

For travelers seeking freedom, privacy, and seamless journeys, private aviation is no longer simply about convenience. It has become part of the experience itself — offering access to hidden resorts, untouched islands, and exclusive retreats unreachable through conventional travel routes.

Recent developments in regional aviation networks are expanding opportunities for scenic flights over Thailand, island hopping in Indonesia, and Cambodia private charter flights connecting cultural and coastal destinations across the region.

Why Luxury Private Charter Flights in Asia Are Growing

Modern luxury travelers increasingly prioritize meaningful experiences, flexibility, and access to destinations beyond the mainstream.

Commercial travel across Southeast Asia often requires multiple airport transfers, ferry connections, and long overland journeys. Private flights to hidden resorts eliminate many of these complexities while creating a far more immersive travel experience.

Today’s boutique luxury travel in Asia is shifting toward:

Direct access to remote destinations

Flexible private schedules

Scenic low-altitude flights

Exclusive island-to-island journeys

Personalized luxury experiences

Seamless regional connections

Private aircraft now offers travelers the ability to move effortlessly between beaches, rainforests, heritage cities, and island retreats while enjoying spectacular aerial views rarely seen from commercial flights.

Private Flight Travel Thailand: Scenic Flights Over Thailand’s Southern Coast

Southern Thailand has emerged as one of the most exciting regions for luxury air travel in Thailand.

Private charter services and scenic flights over Thailand now create easier access to destinations such as Krabi, Phuket, and Hua Hin.

Flying above the Andaman coastline reveals:

Limestone cliffs rising from emerald waters

Hidden lagoons and secluded beaches

Remote islands inaccessible by road

Panoramic views of Thailand’s southern archipelagos

For travelers staying at boutique resorts or private villas in Thailand transforms transfers into unforgettable experiences rather than logistical necessities.

Private charter aircraft commonly used on these routes include:

Amphibious private planes

Light turboprop aircraft

Executive private charters for regional travel

These flights are especially appealing for travelers seeking exclusive travel experiences in Southeast Asia while avoiding crowded commercial hubs.

Discover Secret Journeys
in Thailand now

Private Flight Indonesia Routes and Island Hopping by Private Aircraft

With more than 17,000 islands spread across the archipelago, Indonesia is naturally suited to private aviation.

Indonesia private flight routes are increasingly opening access to some of the country’s most breathtaking destinations, allowing travelers to experience island hopping in Indonesia with unprecedented ease.

Potential routes and experiences include:

Flights between Bali and remote eastern islands

Private access to diving regions near Raja Ampat

Scenic aerial journeys above Komodo National Park

Direct flights to eco-retreats and hidden surf destinations

Rather than spending days navigating ferries and airport connections, travelers can move efficiently between islands while witnessing volcanoes, coral reefs, and untouched coastlines from above.

Private island flights in Southeast Asia are becoming one of the most desirable ways to experience Indonesia’s extraordinary geography.

Discover Secret Journeys
in Indonesia now

Cambodia Private Charter Flights and Remote Luxury Experiences

In Cambodia, private aviation offers an entirely different perspective on the country’s landscapes and cultural heritage.

Cambodia private charter flights create opportunities to connect:

Phnom Penh and Siem Reap

Remote eco-lodges and coastal islands

Waterways surrounding Tonlé Sap

Lesser-visited provinces and nature reserves

As luxury travel evolves, Cambodia is becoming increasingly attractive for travelers seeking hidden destinations in Asia beyond traditional tourism routes.

Discover Secret Journeys
in Cambodia now

Private Flights to Hidden Resorts and Boutique Retreats

One of the greatest advantages of private aviation is the ability to connect seamlessly with smaller boutique properties and hidden retreats across Southeast Asia.

For travelers exploring with Secret Retreats, private charter journeys complement the philosophy of slower, more meaningful travel by allowing guests to spend less time in transit and more time immersed in local culture and landscapes.

Whether flying toward:

Hidden jungle lodges

Private beachfront villas

Remote island retreats

Heritage residences

Wellness sanctuaries

…the journey itself becomes part of the luxury experience.

Secret Retreats Expands into Nan Province with Newly Opened Visama Explorer Nan

A new eco-luxury tented camp introduces travellers to one of Northern Thailand’s last undiscovered destinations

Secret Retreats announces the opening of Visama Explorer Nan, marking both the launch of a new eco-luxury tented camp and the introduction of Nan Province as a new destination within the Secret Retreats collection.

Officially opened in early 2026, Visama Explorer Nan brings travellers into the mountainous far north of Thailand, near the Laos border — a region still largely untouched by international tourism and known for its ancient Lanna heritage, Tai Lue culture, traditional salt wells, and dramatic natural landscapes.

Located in a secluded valley in Bo Kluea District, the retreat features just eight air-conditioned tented suites set alongside a mountain stream, offering an intimate experience rooted in nature, culture, and meaningful local connection.

As part of the collaboration, Secret Retreats and Visama Explorer Nan will work together to position Nan Province as an emerging destination for experiential and sustainable travel in Thailand. The partnership aims to introduce discerning travellers to a lesser-known side of Northern Thailand through immersive journeys, community engagement, and authentic cultural experiences.

“Nan represents the kind of destination travellers are increasingly searching for — authentic, preserved, and still undiscovered,” said Stephane Junca – Secret Retreats’ Founder and Managing Director. “Together with Visama Explorer Nan, we look forward to bringing greater awareness to the region while supporting responsible tourism and local cultural preservation.”

Accessible via a direct 80-minute flight from Bangkok, the destination pairs naturally with Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai while offering a distinctly different experience far from Thailand’s traditional tourism routes.

Explore Taiwan Beyond the Cities with Secret Coastal Journeys & Island Experiences

Taiwan is often known for its vibrant cities, famous night markets, and mountain landscapes, but beyond the urban energy lies another side of the island — one shaped by the sea. Hidden fishing villages, dramatic Pacific coastlines, volcanic shores, indigenous traditions, and secret island escapes reveal a slower, more soulful Taiwan waiting to be discovered.

The “Waving Taiwan Waters” journey by Secret Retreats invites travelers to experience Taiwan through its deep connection with the ocean. This immersive luxury Taiwan tour combines coastal exploration, marine adventures, authentic local culture, and boutique stays designed for travelers seeking something beyond the ordinary.

From kayaking along untouched coastlines and paddleboarding through crystal-clear waters to discovering remote seaside communities and relaxing in natural hot springs after a day on the ocean, this journey unveils some of the most beautiful and lesser-known places to visit in Taiwan.

Unlike conventional Taiwan day trips focused only on major cities, this Secret Journey reveals Taiwan’s hidden coastal beauty — where rugged cliffs meet turquoise waters, fishermen still follow centuries-old traditions, and quiet island landscapes offer rare moments of tranquility.

Taiwan’s coastline stretches for more than 1,500 kilometers and remains one of Asia’s most underrated coastal destinations. Along the journey, travelers encounter secluded beaches, volcanic rock formations, rich marine biodiversity, and authentic seafood culture deeply connected to island life. Certain offshore islands are even famous for seasonal bioluminescent waters known as the “Blue Tears,” a natural phenomenon that transforms the sea into glowing blue light after sunset.

Carefully curated by Secret Retreats, this experience combines luxury, slow travel, nature, and cultural immersion through intimate boutique stays and meaningful local encounters. It is a journey designed not simply to visit Taiwan, but to truly experience its hidden rhythm.

Every Monday, I take you on a journey somewhere in Thailand—to discover a place, a dish, an emotion, a unique experience designed to spark curiosity and inspire something truly memorable.

So… is it a floating market or not? Is it traditional, authentic, ecstatic, apathetic, beneficial, touristy, comical, cosmic, energetic, exotic?
Take a breath, we are switching to “sabai sabai” mode, the gentle philosophy of Thai life.

Sunday morning, 8:55am. The sun is already high over Nonthaburi, just 30 minutes from Bangkok.
I enter this extravagant temple through the mouth of a tiger and exit through the jaws of a dragon, a symbolic passage meant to keep evil spirits away. Just a few meters away, a canal awaits. A wooden boat carries me along old riverside homes, each surrounded by orchards, almost swallowed by jungle. Water hyacinths form floating carpets on the surface. Small rowboats return loaded with fruits and vegetables. Here and there, vendors drift by on their boats – serving hot soups, old-style coffee, even gas cylinders. Storks perch quietly overhead, while ducks glide in orderly lines across the water. It feels like a parallel world, moving to a different rhythm. You simply let yourself be carried by its softness.

Discover our collection
in Thailand

Back at the starting point, boats are moored along the riverbank. Some still sell produce from their gardens, others have turned into tiny floating kitchens – fried noodles, skewers, omelets .
Under the covered market, everything comes alive. People eat at small tables or take food home. You rediscover a childlike sense of wonder, an appetite for discovery, the urge to taste everything. At every step, eyes widen.

Freshly harvested vegetables overflow from the stalls. Fruits are abundant – some rarely seen in the city. Santol with its yellow skin and cottony white flesh, sapodilla with caramel notes, salak (snake fruit), seasonal Marian plum, and gac (Fak Khao), a large spiny orange fruit whose pulp becomes a delicious juice. And there are many more.

Stalls overflow with dishes that tease the nose, sharpen the eyes, and awaken the taste buds: sausages with cabbage leaves, smoked or dried fish, fried prawns, crispy pork rinds, fish cakes wrapped in banana leaves, steaming curries infused with countless spices, sticky rice with red beans cooked in bamboo, and desserts in every color: coconut-based sweets, tapioca pearls, and much more.
Smoke blends with laughter, conversations, and calls from vendors. It becomes a long, joyful disruption of the senses. The mind can no longer keep up – it wants everything at once.

A kind of exhilaration takes over…
Then suddenly, you come back to yourself, slumped on a chair, still licking your lips, fingers sticky, tongue stained. What just happened?
This, too, is life: small moments that become rare, meaningful memories.
A return to something essential, deep within oneself.

So, does the idea of a “floating market” still feel the same? Certainly not this one.
Gently nudge your clients by the ear-and leave the rest to us. Smiles and happiness? We take care of that.

Floating Retreats & Waterborne Journeys

Around the region’s great lakes, daily life continues to move in rhythm with the rising and receding waters.
Floating markets appear before sunrise along riverbanks. Villages stand above seasonal lakes on timber stilts. Houseboats drift slowly across mirrored backwaters. Offshore, island communities and maritime cultures continue traditions connected to tides, currents, and the open sea.
For centuries, waterways across Asia have functioned as trade routes, highways, and places of settlement. Even today, many journeys across the region still unfold best by boat.

Floating Markets: Thailand and the Mekong Delta

Floating markets remain among Southeast Asia’s most recognizable water cultures, though their character differs greatly across the region.
In Thailand, floating markets often preserve the atmosphere of the traditional canal communities through which they glide. Traditional wooden canoes paddle or ‘putter’ along long-established waterways carrying tropical fruits, sweets, flowers, and freshly prepared local dishes. Markets such as Amphawa and Damnoen Saduak reflect a slower canal-based culture, one that was once central to life around Bangkok and Central Thailand.
Further east, in the Mekong Delta, floating markets continue to operate as active trading networks. Markets such as Cai Rang begin before dawn, with larger boats gathering produce from farmers and growers across the delta. Here, the river still functions as a highway, linking farming communities, fisheries, and river settlements throughout southern Vietnam.
Though both are called floating markets, one reflects preserved canal heritage while the other remains deeply connected to the working rhythms of the Mekong River.

Floating Retreats and Lake Escapes

Water also shapes some of Asia’s most atmospheric stays.
In southern Thailand, 500 Rai Floating Resort sits quietly on Cheow Lan Lake within Khao Sok National Park. Accessible by boat, the floating resort drifts between limestone cliffs and rainforest landscapes where mornings arrive through layers of mist and silence.
Further west in the forests in the shadow of the Cardamom Mountains, Canvas & Orchids Retreat offers another interpretation of life on water. Luxurious floating tented villas rest along quiet river channels surrounded by mangroves and dense rainforest, creating a stay shaped by river movement, wildlife, and one of Southeast Asia’s least explored wildernesses.
These floating retreats are less about spectacle and more about immersion, destinations that allow travelers to experience landscapes where water defines the rhythm of daily life.

Discover Secret Journeys
in Cambodia

Stilt Villages and Seasonal Waterways

Along these vast freshwater landscapes, people have long lived in close relationship with the rhythms of water.
On Inle Lake, in the Shan State of Myanmar, homes, monasteries, temples, schools, and floating gardens stand above the water on timber stilts. The community is connected by narrow canals. Daily life unfolds directly on the lake itself, where fishermen ply the waters in their distinctive leg-rowing technique that has become synonymous with Inle’s identity.
Around Tonlé Sap, in Cambodia, villages expand and contract alongside Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. Seasonal monsoon floods dramatically reshape the landscape each year, reinforcing a way of life that has been shaped by constant environmental movement.
Rather than resisting water, these communities evolved alongside it.

Houseboats and Slow Water Journeys

Some journeys are best experienced slowly.
In the northern region of India, traditional houseboats once transported families and goods across lakes and waterways long before roads connected the region. Today, stays aboard the Sukoon Houseboat preserve that slower pace of travel on Srinagar’s Dal Lake where George Harrison of The Beatles took lessons on the sitar from Ravi Shankar, a legend of Indian classical music.
Mornings unfold through drifting mist, floating gardens, and quiet encounters with local boatmen crossing calm waters carrying flowers, produce, and tea. The experience recalls a style of travel shaped by patience and observation rather than schedules.

Sea Nomads and Maritime Cultures

Beyond rivers and lakes, Asia’s floating worlds continue across open seas.
Communities such as the Moken of Thailand’s Andaman Sea coast, and the Bajau communities of eastern Indonesia and the southern Philippines have all developed traditions that are closely tied to maritime migration, following and finding the fishing routes, reefs, and seasonal winds. Their knowledge of navigation and the marine ecosystems reflects the generations of life that have been shaped by the ocean.
Though many communities are increasingly settled today, their cultural connection to the sea remains one of Asia’s oldest living maritime traditions.

Floating Dining and Island Hopping

Along rivers, lakes, and coastlines, dining often unfolds directly beside, or even above, the water.
Floating seafood restaurants along Thailand’s coastlines, riverside dining on the Chao Phraya, and raft kitchens beside lakes and reservoirs all reflect culinary traditions that are deeply connected to waterways and the day’s catch.
Further offshore, island hopping remains one of Asia’s most timeless forms of travel. From the limestone islands of Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay to the remote archipelagos of Raja Ampat in Indonesia, these journeys continue to follow the rhythms shaped by the sea, its tides, and the weather.
In Asia’s floating worlds, movement slows naturally, and the journey itself becomes part of the destination.

From floating markets and stilt villages to rainforest lakes and island journeys, these water-shaped experiences reveal a different rhythm of travel, one that feels slower, quieter, and more connected to place. Through the Secret Retreats collection, travelers can continue discovering destinations where rivers, lakes, and the open sea remain part of everyday life
